Coffee for Diabetes
Can I drink coffee if I have diabetes? This is a question many diabetics ask themselves.
Let’s take a dive into the do’s, don’ts, and the factors to consider…
Is Coffee OK for Diabetics?
While coffee in itself does not contain sugar, and almost zero calories, it can still affect the blood sugar levels.
Caffeine causes the body to release cortisol, which is the stress hormone. When this happens, the body is put into “fight or flight” mode. This also causes the blood sugar levels to go up, and the body to become more resistant to insulin. Read more about coffee and Cortisol.
Are there any benefits of drinking coffee for diabetics?
Coffee contains certain bioactive compounds, including antioxidants like chlorogenic acid, which can have positive effects when consumed in moderation.
These antioxidants can help reduce inflammation, but once again, when taken in moderation.
The Best Coffee for Diabetics
This does not mean picking a certain brand or roast, but rather how diabetics should enjoy their coffee in terms of what they add to it.
1. Black Coffee:
Plain black coffee is the best choice as it contains no sugar or anything else. It allows diabetics to enjoy their coffee without worrying about spikes in blood sugar levels.
2. Unsweetened Coffee, with milk or cream:
If black coffee is too bitter for your taste, try adding some milk or cream to it. The lactose (milk sugars) will add a touch of sweetness without any significant blood sugar increase, and the creaminess will make the bitterness les intense.
3. Use Natural Sweeteners, Not Sugar:
If you enjoy your coffee sweetened, you can add a natural sweetener to your coffee instead of sugar. Some of the bet options are stevia and erythritol, as these will add sweetness without spiking your blood sugar levels.
4. Decaffeinated Coffee:
One option is to cut out the caffeine but still enjoy coffee by drinking decaf coffee when you are a diabetic. However, it is often said that the taste is not the same and that one should instead drink something else entirely.
5. Coffee Alternatives:
Certain teas, like rooibos, do not contain caffeine and can be a good replacement. However, if you are looking for something more like coffee, MannaBrew mesquite espresso might be a far better option.
It is completely caffeine free and does not cause acidity in the body like coffee – and even decaffeinated coffee – does.
